What are we learning?!QTIPS - This is a link to download the strategy we will use in word problems to help us with our problem solving skills. Click on "addition" or subtraction" to see examples of QTIPS being used with an addition and subtraction word problem. Prodigy Game - This game is almost like a video game so the kids love it! But don't worry...it is educational! I can actually go in and set the topic of questions they have to answer in their wizard land. I can also see their progress and if they are answering these questions correctly and it helps me to know what they still need to work on. I highly suggest allowing them to play this. Xtra Math is another website that allows students to practice fluency on their math facts which is a very important skill they need to learn and keep! It only takes about 10 minutes or less to run through this. Once we have centers set up in the classroom, we will do this in school. Class Dojo is the behavior system I use in the classroom. You have a code to logon and see how your child's day was in math class. They can use the points they earn on the patriot cart for prizes. |

This week we will learn the last data graph, a stem and leap plot. We have learned a little about them when they pop up in our daily warmups, but we will take a closer look at them. Tuesday we will not have a math lesson due to Staar Writing. If we have time at the end of the week we will start looking at Elapsed Time.
This week we are working on looking at data and making graphs based of the data. We are then breaking apart those graphs to see what they really mean and how to read them. So far we have learned Frequency Tables and Dot Plots. They both show how frequent or how often something occurs.
Today we reviewed a test on lines and angles. Tomorrow we will not have a math lesson due to the Mock Writing STAAR. Thursday and Friday we will look at angles and fractional parts of a circle and degrees.
Notes from our Geometry Unit (More to come next week): Lines Classify Quadrilaterals Angles Classify And Name Triangles Angles and Fractional Parts of a Circle We started late last week talking about metric units and converting metric units. We practiced with length Friday and will look this week at metric weight and capacity. We will spend the rest of week putting all the units together and practicing converting them.
Metric Units Covert Length in Metric This week we will start our measurement unit. We will look specifically this week at the customary units of measurement....length, weight and volume. We will practice converting these measurements and finding the pattern when doing so. Ex... 1 yard = 3 feet so then 2 yards=6 feet.
Notes from this week: Customary Units of Length Converting Units of Length p1 Converting Units of Length p2 Customary Units of Weight Converting Units of Weight This week we will continue working on Area and Perimeter. We will work on building our problem solving skills to solve area and perimeter problems to find missing sides or the area of a certain portion of a figure.
This week we will focus on converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and back. View the video. View Notes from class.
We will also look at comparing and ordering fractions. Comparing Fractions Notes. Comparing and Ordering Fractions Notes. Thursday and Friday we will take a break from fractions and take our middle of the year math and reading assessments. These are done on the computer and just helps us to determine how we can better help each student. They do not go in the gradebook. Reports will come home. I will be out Thursday-Monday. If you need anything before I return please contact Mrs. Ceto or Ms. Martinez. This week will start learning all about Fractions! We will start by breaking down fractions into unit fractions then move into Equivalent fractions and being able to make them with models then without models. We will also look at how to put a fraction into its simplest form.
Notes Equivalent Fractions Using Models Equivalent Fraction by Multiplying Fractions in Simplest Form This week we will focus on dividing with partial quotients and explicit trade. Then move into problem solving with division.
Partial Quotients Notes Explicit Trade Video - Explicit Trade Notes This week I gave no homework because the students will be working extra hard taking 3 district assessments in math, reading and science. We are continuing division going up to a 4 digit dividend (the number under the house!). The students are doing very well with it! We will will also look at interpreting those remainders and what those mean. We will then look at estimating with division using compatible numbers. Video: Divide with Compatible Numbers Estimate Quotients with Compatible Numbers Sorry for the late update! I think the days get busier and busier! We have started division! A small start! We have reviewed what they do know about it and the vocabulary they need to know to understand it. We will then get into dividing with 2 digit divedends by 1 digit divisors with remainders. (EX. 58/9). Next week our dividends will go up to 4 digit! We have also practiced with dividing by 10's, 100's and 1000's. They thought the zero trick was super cool that it worked with division also and not just multiplication! So far they are very interested in division!
Here is a video you can show your student to prep them for next week. The video starts with a 2 digit dividend, which is as far as we will get this week....then goes into larger dividends which we will start next week. We will continue working on our multiplication skills. We will also focus this week on problems solving with multistep problems that include addition, subtraction and multiplication.
Word Problem using QTIPS .....and another example This week we will continue to learn and practice multiplying 2x2 digit factors. We will also work on problem solving word problems focusing on multiplication. Homework this week will focus on problems solving. There will only be 6 questions for the week that they will solve using QTIPS, our problem solving model. An example of how to use it, is below. The more practice they get with this, the more fluent they become in using it and the more helpful it becomes. I have already seen an improvement in problem solving skills when this is used!
Here are some pictures of our Math Journal Notes we take in class to help you at home: (Not uploaded yet...coming soon) Area Model Partial Products FOIL Standard Algorithm QTIPS Model We have learned different ways to multiply up to 4x1 digit number. This week we will kick it up a notch and move into 2x2 digit multiplication. We will learn the area model, partial products, expanded form, and the traditional standard algorithm. I will post any videos here that I think will help.
Area Model 4x1 Digit Area Model 2x2 Digit Partial Products 2x2 Digit Standard Algorithm 2x2 Digit This week we will start our 2nd unit on Multiplication. We will start out learning the 0's trick. 30x20=500. Add the first digit in each factor then count the zeros and add them to the product! We will also cover estimating products then get into area model and partial products of up to 4x1 digit multiplication. Here are some helpful notes to study:
Estimating Products Area Model Method for Multiplying This week we will be wrapping up our first math unit of the year. We will focus on using problem solving multistep addition and subtraction problems. We will the QTIPS strategy to solve. This strategy will also be used in 5th grade. This helps them to slow down and really look at what the question is asking. Thursday we will review everything we have learned in our first unit of math and will take a unit test on Friday.
Q-Question: Read twice and restate in own words T- Think: Question, Problem, Strategy +-x/ I- Information: Numbers and Labels P- Problem Solve *Show work S-Solution Sentence - Answer the question in a complete sentence This week we are starting off with some rounding up to the hundred thousands place. Then we will get into adding and subtracting with decimals. This weeks homework will practice comparing and ordering decimals. This can be a hard concept. Any help at home will be appreciated! We will also be doing some more hands on practice with it in our math rotations this week.
Helpful Videos: Decimal Place Value Decimal Song Rounding This week will will focus on relating Tenths to Decimals (1/10 to 0.1) and Hundredths to Decimals (1/100 to .01) We will then make a connection between decimals and money! Thursday we will have a short mini-test on what we have covered so far with place value. Friday we will start comparing decimals using greater than, less than and equal to. Homework this week....when I made it last week I forgot that this is a short week! There is a page for each night, however with the short week I told them they had to only complete half of page 2 and half of page 3....All of page 1 and 4.
We will be starting place value up to the billions place and to the hundredths place in decimals. We will relate decimal place values to money. We will also learn how to write these numbers in written, expanded form and expanded notation. Homework will begin this week. I will hand it out on Monday, due back Friday. It is suggested that the front is for Monday/Tuesday and the back is for Wednesday/Thursday night.
We will be spending time this week getting to know each other, learning routines and procedures, and of course we will start reviewing some 3rd grade math concepts that we might have forgotten over the summer!
